In memory of our graduate Chantal Jakobsen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was with deep shock and great sadness that we learnt of the violent attack at a child and youth welfare centre in Stade, in which six social workers were killed on 29 June 2026.

We, the staff of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences \u2013 and many of us on a deeply personal level \u2013 mourn the loss of our graduate Chantal Jakobsen, who was brutally murdered whilst carrying out her work as a social worker. The entire year group who studied alongside Chantal has come together in mourning for their fellow student and feels particularly close to Chantal\u2019s family and all those who have been deeply affected by the deaths of six social workers.

Those who lost their lives carried out their work with integrity and a sense of responsibility \u2013 serving people in difficult life circumstances, often under great pressure and in sensitive, conflict-ridden situations. What has happened to them affects not only their families and colleagues, but the entire social work profession, to which Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, through its Department of Social and Health Care, feels a strong connection.

Our thoughts are with Chantal\u2019s family, friends and colleagues, with all the victims of this act of violence, and with everyone who witnessed the incident or is having to cope with its aftermath.

At the same time, this event brings to the fore an issue that directly concerns us as a training institution for social work: the protection of professionals who dedicate themselves to helping others on a daily basis. We will address this issue in greater depth through teaching, research and professional dialogue with our partner organisations.

We expressly endorse the Statement by the DBSH Federal Executive Committee<\/a> which addresses the issue of dealing with dangerous situations in social work and, at the same time, emphasises the importance of protection and safety measures in social work.

Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences extends its sympathies and heartfelt condolences to all those affected.
