Course Outline

This programme is offered with 2 specializations, whereby you can choose your specialization in the 2nd semester:

  • Specialization 1: Environmental Technology (ET)
  • Specialisation 2: Recycling Technology (RT)

In this way, students are given the opportunity to give greater weight to their own interests in the respective specialisation.

Irrespective of the above chosen specialisation, students all need to complete the following compulsory subjects in the 1st semester:

  • Project Management (Module 568)
  • Proseminar / Soft Skills (Module 731)
  • Life Cycle Assessment (Module 732)
  • Environmental and Sustainability Management (Module 733)
  • Environmental Law (Module 734)
  • German as a Foreign Language II (Module 913) or Technical English II (Module 914)
    - foreign students need to choose "German as a Foreign Language II" (Module 913) while students of German-speaking universities choose "Technical English II" (Module 914).

In the 2nd semester, the focus is on the respective central core topics in the area of the two specialisations. The catalogue of subjects in the specialisations is thus composed of special courses that are tailored to the contents of the respective specialisation of the English-language Master's programme.

Specialisation 1 - Environmental Technology (ET)

  • Bioengineering (Module 864)
  • Environmental Pollutants and Chemistry Aspects (Module 735)
  • Wastewater Engineering (Module 736)
  • Plant Planning for Environmental Technology / Project Work (Module 737)
  • Renewable Raw Material (Module 738)

Specialisation 2 - Recycling Technology (RT)

  • Urban Mining and Circular Economy (Module 739)
  • Recycling Technologies of Anthropogenic Material Flows (Module 740)
  • Preparation of Energy Raw Materials from Waste and Recovery (Module 742)
  • Plant Planning for Recycling Technology / Project Work (Module 743)
  • Future Technologies of Recycling Practice / Project Work (Module 744)

In addition to conveying theoretical knowledge, the courses are supplemented by excursions in order to establish the closest possible practical relevance.

The planned project work plays an important role in the concept of the course.

The Master's thesis (Module 941) in the last semester marks the completion of the three-semester course.
In the sense of an application-oriented study programme, it is recommended that the Master's thesis should be written outside of the university (at a company or another research institution) or at the ThIWert.

Graduation, recognition, accreditation

Degree: Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in the field of Environmental and Recycling Technology.

Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences is officially accredited by the state of Thuringia as a state-recognised university. This guarantees the equivalence of the degrees with degrees of state universities.

The Master's programme in Environmental and Recycling Technology has been accredited by the Accreditation, Certification and Quality Assurance Institute (ACQUIN).

Admission requirements

To be admitted to the Master's programme Environmental and Recycling Technology (M.Eng.), the following qualifications are necessary:

The prerequisite for admission to the programme is a qualified and completed university degree as Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science in the Bachelor's programmes Environmental and Recycling Technology, Waste Management, Process Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Geotechnical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or comparable programmes with the scope of 210 credit points according to the ECTS system. A qualified degree is deemed to have been obtained if the course of study was completed with an overall grade of 2.5 or better. The exact regulation for the classification of a degree is stated in the study regulations.

Applicants with a degree comprising only 180 ECTS credits have the possibility to complete a qualification semester before starting the Master's programme. The modules of the qualification semester are explained in the study plan and module handbook.

Since the modules of the programme are held in English (with the exception of the module "German as a Foreign Language II", module 913), sufficient English language skills are required. If the Bachelor's degree submitted was not obtained at an English-speaking college or university, the applicant must prove that he/she has a command of the English language at language level B2. TOEFL, IELTS, the certificate of higher education entrance qualification or comparable qualifications are considered as proof.

If you have any questions about the admission requirements, just give us a call. Our university team will be happy to advise you by telephone on +49 3631 420-222 or in person on site.

Important Advice for German Student Visa-Seekers

All prospective applicants are advised to carefully check the visa requirements, appointment waiting and processing times at the reponsible German mission  abroad before application and plan it accordingly. Only then you can ensure that you are able to commence your studies properly.

We are aware of long visa appointment waiting times and delayed visa issuances in the German visa offices of certain countries. Please understand that we cannot influence the visa process in any way, even in case of successful admission. It is also not possible to defer your admission to a later term.

The classes in winter semester will be provided in hybrid format for latecomers due to delays in student visa issuances. All exams and classes in summer semester will only be provided in presence format only. Students who got admission but can't obtain their visas in time, are advised to not enrol and have their application being reconsidered for the next year's intake.
