Home | Invitation to the lecture series "Violence and Gender" in the community centre of the city of Nordhausen

Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, together with the city's Equal Opportunities Officer, cordially invites all interested parties to the lecture series "Violence and Gender", which starts on 24 October 2023 and highlights various aspects of the connection between violence and gender. The lectures deal with this topic from different perspectives and offer insights into the complexity of the problem as well as possible approaches for action. The event starts at 18:00, is free of charge and takes place in the Nordhausen community centre. Registration is not required.
The lecture series includes the following dates and topics:

28.11.23: Domestic violence against women
12.12.23: Masculinity and violence
09.01.24: Projects from the field
23.01.24: Combating violence against women: Reality and utopia
1 Introduction to the topic and overview
The lecture series will be opened by Prof. Dr Petra Brzank, Prof. Dr Sabrina Schramme, Prof. Dr Stefan Siegel and Stefani Müller, Equal Opportunities Officer of the district of Nordhausen. They will provide an introduction and present the lecture series, its significance and the organisers.
Prof Dr Sabrina Schramme sheds light on the diversity of violence and experiences of violence, particularly taking into account various factors such as gender, age, disability, social background, sexual orientation and gender identity. The lecture emphasises the need for different approaches.
Prof Dr Petra J. Brzank MPH talks about domestic violence against women as a serious social problem. She analyses the gender-specific contexts and the effects on those affected and society as a whole.
Prof Dr Stefan Siegel examines the link between masculinity and violence and takes a look at psychological theories that can explain this connection.
Steffi Mayer from the Intervention Centre against Domestic Violence North Thuringia and Eva Oppelt from Project Orange, violent conflict counselling for perpetrators of domestic violence, will present their work and discuss the challenges of supporting victims and perpetrators.
The closing event offers an insight into the Council of Europe Convention on Violence against Women and the implementation status in Thuringia. Requirements for action will be discussed in a panel discussion:
The lecture series "Violence and Gender" is an initiative of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the Institute of Social Medicine, Rehabilitation Sciences and Health Services Research (ISRV) and the City of Nordhausen.
