Family-conscious university

Students and employees with children or relatives in need of care face the particular challenge of fulfilling both their work at the university and their family obligations.

Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences sees itself as a family-conscious university and supports students and employees with suitable framework conditions so that the balancing act between study/work and family obligations is successful. We offer, for example

  • Counselling services
  • Family-friendly study organisation
  • Flexible working time development
  • Campus daycare centre
  • Changing stations
  • Family-friendly services provided by Studierendenwerk Thüringen on the university campus

The basis for this is the concept of family, which in the Mission statement of the university is anchored in the definition of family. According to this, a family is defined as any place where long-term parenting or care responsibilities are assumed for children, partners or relatives in need of care.

The compatibility of studies/work and family can be very different - we endeavour to find solutions for your personal situation and your needs during the consultation. The Equal Opportunities and Family Officer and the Advisory Board for Gender Equality of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences are there to help you.

A family-conscious university does not just mean creating good conditions for parents with children. It also means making it easier to reconcile life and work at the university for a growing number of parents. People with caring responsibilities to make this possible. The respective group plays a special role here - different approaches are conceivable as to how Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences can fulfil its role as a place of teaching and learning, as an employer and as a place of employment for civil servants with care responsibilities.

Students with caring responsibilities

For Students with caring responsibilities the framework conditions of the study and examination regulations are binding. Students at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences can apply for a semester of leave or part-time study if they have intensive care needs for relatives. In the long term, the efforts of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences to create more e-learning programmes can be a flexible alternative to catch up on missed courses. In individual cases, an individual solution should be sought directly with the lecturers and an application for compensation for disadvantages should be made.

Employees with care responsibilities

For the group of employees Flexible working time structures - The flexible working hours agreement is an important pillar in promoting the compatibility of work and family life. The service agreement on flexible working hours is currently being applied and will continue to be applied in its tried and tested form. It gives university employees the freedom they need for their daily work in order to reconcile work and family life. There are individual special agreements that can be utilised at any time in the event of family concerns.

In addition, flexitime models with a core working time of six hours and an unlimited carry-over option as well as family-related part-time work (including during parental leave) are in place in the individual areas of the university. Traffic light accounts are also kept in order to react flexibly to fluctuations in the workload during the lecture-free period and the lecture period. In principle, employees can organise their working hours in the sense of trust-based working hours. The mobility of employees is supported by flexible break arrangements and a broad framework of working hours in accordance with the service agreement.

Studying with a child is a particular challenge that requires organisational talent and flexibility. On the other hand, according to many student parents, studying is also a particularly good time to decide to have a child because you have more time for your offspring than later in your professional life.

You can find out more about the family-friendly measures in the brochure "Studying with a child at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences (PDF)" for comprehensive information.

You can also find a helpful collection of information and experiences on the homepage www.studieren-mit-kind.org
