Steps after authorisation and before entering Germany

Please find out about visa requirements before you apply and are admitted. If there are long waiting times for visa appointments, you may need to book a visa appointment before your application and admission.

For Students with citizenship of an EU/EEA country no visa is required. A valid identity card or passport is sufficient to enter Germany.
For some other countries, it is possible to enter Germany without a visa and apply for a residence permit after visa-free entry

All other students who are subject to the visa requirement, must first apply for a visa at the German Embassy or the German Consulate General in their country of residence. Processing visa applications and issuing visas can sometimes take several months and longer than the times stated on the website of the Federal Foreign Office. Find out as early as possible and start preparing your documents and visa application in good time!

If you require a visa to study in Germany, you must prove that you have sufficient financial means to cover all the costs associated with studying and living in Germany.
You must provide this proof when you apply for your visa at the German diplomatic mission abroad.

The following options are available:

  • Blocked account
    A selection of possible providers of blocked accounts: CoracleDropmoney, Expatrio, Fintiba
  • Proof of income and assets of your parents
  • Guarantee from a person living in Germany
  • Bank guarantee
  • Scholarship from a recognised scholarship provider

You will receive your letter of admission after successfully applying for a place at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences. The admission requirements and application deadlines can be found here.
If you require a visa, you will need a letter of admission and, if applicable, the certificate of enrolment for the visa application.

After receiving the letter of admission, you accept the university's offer of admission and can then apply for enrolment ("matriculation") at the ►HISinOne portal place.

In order to start your studies at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, you must enrol or matriculate in good time.

The Study Service Centre processes and checks all enrolment applications. The application for enrolment and the Thoska (student card and student ID) runs entirely via the HISinOne Portal.

After you have received your admission, you can upload your passport photo to the HISinOne portal and receive the enrolment application form for transferring the semester fee. Download this for your records and follow the payment instructions for the semester fee carefully. Semester fee.

Please note the following information:

  • Please only submit proof that you have paid the semester fee if we explicitly ask for it. As long as you have entered the correct amount and reference, the Student Service Centre can allocate the payment and you do not need to send us proof by email. The processing of the bank transfer can take several days, in some cases even longer. Please be patient. You will then receive further information and instructions by e-mail.
  • Payment of the semester fee is currently only possible by bank transfer to the account of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences. An international bank transfer can take considerably longer than a national bank transfer. The transaction or conversion fees for an international bank transfer must be paid by you be worn.
  • Your enrolment application will only be processed once payment has been received in the university's bank account, so transfer the semester fee much earlier than the start of the semester to avoid unnecessary delays.
  • Late payment of the semester fee can lead to loss of admission/entitlement to enrolment! Without payment of the semester fee you do not have student status at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences and cannot receive proof of enrolment or a certificate of enrolment!

Semester fee

You must organise your own accommodation in Nordhausen before you leave. There are accommodation options in halls of residence run by the Studierendenwerk Thüringen on the campus of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, but they only have a limited number of places and rooms available. You should therefore also regularly inform yourself about housing offers on the private housing market. You can find links to accommodation offers and tips on how to find or get accommodation under "Accommodation" on the page Living and studying in Nordhausen.

After entering the country

To ensure that you can move into your room as quickly as possible, arrange a personal appointment with your landlord in good time to hand over the keys. Before you sign your tenancy agreement, you should read the tenancy conditions carefully and take note of them. As the contract is between you and the landlord, you are responsible for complying with the rental conditions. Furthermore, we cannot offer any support in the event of problems or conflicts; please contact external advice centres with (rental) legal expertise.

If you have been allocated a place in the hall of residence, you must contact the Studierendenwerk Thüringen turn.

We strongly recommend that all newly enrolled students participate in the Study introduction weekin the first week of each semester (Semester dates). Not only will you receive important information about the organisation of your studies and formalities, but you will also get to know student life, what the university and the city have to offer and, of course, the other first-year students.

Please note that there is no entitlement to individual support from the International Office if you have not taken part in the introductory week.

Students in Germany must provide proof of health insurance when enrolling. You should therefore first check whether the health insurance from your home country is also valid in Germany. If this is not the case, you must take out insurance with a German health insurance company.

Next, we recommend that you go to a bank and open a German current account. This usually does not involve any costs for students. You can then use this account to make regular payments such as rent or health insurance. You can also withdraw cash from your account free of charge at many places in Germany and make cashless payments.

Step 1: Residence registration

As soon as you have moved into your room and have a permanent address, you are obliged to within two weeks with the responsible Residents' Registration Office Nordhausen (Citizens' Service) to register.

You will need the following documents for this:

Please note: If you change your place of residence, you are obliged to re-register immediately!

Step 2: Applying for a visa extension or residence permit

The Student visa for entry is usually only valid for three months. Within this period, all students studying at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences for longer than three months must submit a Long-term residence permit at the foreigners authority responsible for your place of residence.

For this you need:

  • Passport (non-EU nationals) or identity card (EU nationals only)
  • Registration confirmation from the registration office (see 6. Residence registration)
  • Application form
  • two passport photos
  • Certificate of enrolment with expected duration of studies (can be submitted in the QISPOS system
    downloaded and printed)
  • Proof of health insurance (see 3. Health insurance)
  • Proof of funding (Study in Germany)

The responsible immigration office for Nordhausen:

  • Students with EEA/EU citizenship generally need none work permit. They have the same status as German citizens. 
  • For Students from other countrieswhose residence permit has been issued for the purpose of studying in Germany:
    • Students are allowed to work 120 full days or 240 half days per year (calendar year) alongside their studies. Anything in excess of this requires the approval of the immigration authority and the Federal Employment Agency. (§ 16 Para. 3 AufenthG)
      • In these cases, the Immigration office a work permit must be applied for.
      • Compulsory internships and student part-time work (work as a tutor, student assistant, etc.) are not covered by this regulation.

As an international student, you must also adhere to the standard period of study specified in the respective study and examination regulations. If, contrary to expectations, your residence permit expires before the end of your studies, you are obliged to early (i.e. 1-2 months before the end of the validity period) to apply for an extension at the foreigners authority responsible for your place of residence.

We recommend that you upload the following documents as proof of your studies:

  1. The latest Study certificate from the QISPOS system
  2. The latest and complete Certificate of your study and examination achievements (transcript of records) from the QISPOS system (incl. exam cancellations and failed attempts)
  3. Certificate of registration for the Bachelor's or Master's thesis, if applicable
    For external Master's theses: Name and contact of the supervisor of the Master's thesis, internship/(Master's) employment contract if applicable

AttentionThe International Office cannot issue you with a study progress certificate or statements on your study progress. The decision to extend your residence permit and its duration is the sole responsibility of the responsible immigration authority - not the International Office of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences.
