First work, then study - and that Without A-levels?

*The legal basis for studying without an Abitur is Section 70 of the Thuringian Higher Education Act of 10 May 2018 (GVBl. p. 149), amended by Article 27 of the Act of 6 June 2018 (GVBl. p. 229).

We have all the important information for you:

(1) Professionally qualified persons without a higher education entrance qualification who have successfully completed at least two years of vocational training in a field related to the intended degree programme, as regulated by federal or state law, and who subsequently provide evidence of at least three years of full-time professional experience in a field related to the intended degree programme, may take up a probationary course of study for a period of at least one to a maximum of two semesters. At the end of the probationary study period, the university will decide whether the student has passed the probationary study period and the semester classification on the basis of the work completed during the study programme in accordance with sentence 1; the work completed during the study programme in accordance with sentence 1 will be taken into account. The trial study programme must be preceded by comprehensive counselling by the university. The details of the study programme according to sentence 1, the admission requirements and the work to be completed during this study programme are regulated by the universities within the framework of their statutes.

(2) Professionally qualified persons without a higher education entrance qualification who have completed vocational training and have worked full-time for at least three years are also entitled to study on a specific degree programme if they pass an entrance examination. The details of the entrance examination, in particular

  1. for which degree programmes entrance examinations are permitted,
  2. Form and content of the examinations to be taken,
  3. the composition of the examination board and the appointment of examiners for the individual parts of the examination, and
  4. the examination procedure

is regulated by each university for its degree programmes within the framework of its statutes.

(3) Notwithstanding Section 67 (1) sentence 1 no. 4, in exceptional cases to be defined by the university, applicants who have only completed vocational training and have several years of professional experience may also be admitted to a continuing education Master's degree programme; vocational training and experience must be related to the intended degree programme. As part of an aptitude test, applicants must provide evidence of a level of knowledge that corresponds to that of a first university degree relevant to the intended degree programme. Further details are regulated by the universities in their statutes.

On 16 July 2014, the University Council adopted the "Statutes governing probationary studies at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences".

The Central Student Counselling Service of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences offers counselling sessions on probationary studies by appointment.

The following documents must be brought to the counselling appointment:

  • School leaving certificate
  • Certificate of vocational training
  • Labour contract
  • qualified reference
  • Curriculum vitae

The counselling interview is recorded and handed over to the applicant in the original. A copy of this record must be attached to the application documents and is only valid for applications to Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences.
