All HSN students have the opportunity to complete a period of study abroad with full recognition of study and examination credits in accordance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). The prerequisite is a signed Learning Agreement, which regulates the recognition of study and examination achievements. This ensures that all modules successfully studied abroad are recognised at HSN.
With the help of the Learning Agreements the coursework to be completed at the host university is compared with that at the home university. In this way, students interested in studying abroad can put together an individual study plan from the courses offered at the host university. The draft of the Learning Agreement is prepared by the responsible ECTS programme coordinator (WiSo Faculty: Chair of the Examination Board, Engineering Faculty: Dean of Studies), taking into account the module descriptions, to check the equivalence of the modules and, if necessary, modify them together with the student. Finally, the Learning Agreement is signed by both the student and the ECTS programme coordinator. This is followed by the signature of the International Office (ECTS university coordination).
With this procedure, students have legal certainty about the specific recognition before the start of their semester abroad. It is precisely defined how each examination achievement abroad will be recognised at the HSN. In addition, a complete, signed learning agreement is a prerequisite for admission to an exchange programme (e.g. Erasmus+).
All necessary documents and forms can be found on the page Steps to studying abroad to find.
The actual recognition of grades after the end of the semester abroad is therefore a mere formality in which the Examination Board is no longer involved. A separate application for recognition is no longer required at this point. Students only need to submit their Transcript of Records examination results listed at the host university in accordance with the Learning Agreement in the ECTS grade crediting form and register with the International Office submit. The examination office checks the information, enters the corresponding German grades based on a conversion table decided by the Advisory Board for International Affairs and forwards them to the Examination Office. All necessary documents and forms can be found on the Steps to studying abroad to find.
If students do not agree with the crediting of their grades, they are asked to first report their concerns to the International Office. If the matter cannot be resolved, there is the option of lodging a complaint. All you need to do is send an informal letter to the International Office. The credit transfer will then be passed on to the examination board responsible for the relevant degree programme. Appeals can be lodged against decisions made by the examination board in accordance with the relevant examination regulations.
