The Institute

The institute, which was founded in 2013, is characterised by a broad spectrum of research and further education as well as interdisciplinary collaboration. The specialised expertise of all professors and research assistants is put into practice in teaching, research projects and a wide range of practical collaborations.      


The specific areas of work of the ISRV are reflected in the Competence centres.

Tasks and services of the institute

  • Basic and applied research in the fields of social medicine, rehabilitation sciences and health services research
  • Scientific monitoring of projects
  • Advice and support for healthcare, rehabilitation and social services organisations and companies
  • Training and further education programmes for employees in the healthcare, social and rehabilitation sectors
  • Expert opinions on socio-medical and rehabilitation science issues as well as care issues
  • Organisation and implementation of scientific events
  • Interdisciplinary cooperation with universities and research institutions
The graphic shows the core competences of the ISRV Institute. At the centre is the term "ISRV core competencies", surrounded by six areas: "Early intervention, curative education", "Social work, social pedagogy", "Rehabilitation, social medicine", "Systemic concepts and methods", "Health sciences" and "Psychiatry, psychosomatics, psychology". In addition, the competencies "Competence Centre Early Childhood", "Competence Centre Rehabilitation Sciences" and "Competence Centre Intersectionality and Health" are highlighted.

ELSA-VG symposium at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences: Focus on partner violence as a risk factor for unwanted pregnancies

How great is the influence of partner violence on unwanted pregnancies? What are the needs for counselling and care for affected women? These were the central questions addressed at the ELSA-VG symposium at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences on 18 June 2025. As part of the ELSA joint research study ("Experiences and life situations of unintentionally pregnant women - counselling and care services") funded by the Federal Ministry of Health on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag, one sub-project (ELSA-VG) explicitly examined the perspectives of women who were affected by violence in their partnership at the time of the unintended pregnancy.

Interdisciplinary symposium at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences: Critical examination of toxic masculinity

On 12 December 2024, the interdisciplinary symposium on the critical examination of toxic masculinity took place at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences. Under the direction of Prof. Dr Petra J. Brzank, Prof. Dr Sabrina Schramme and Prof. Dr Stefan Kunde-Siegel, experts from various disciplines came together to shed light on and critically discuss the facets of hegemonic and toxic masculinity in ten exciting presentations.

ELSA-VG Symposium
