What you can expect during your studies...

The geotechnical engineering degree programme at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences combines geosciences with technical challenges that our society has to face every day. Scarce resources, the energy transition and climate change are factors that strongly influence our lives and require sustainable utilisation so that future generations can live in a healthy environment. In geotechnical engineering, you will learn how to master these challenges, use resources wisely and with foresight and revolutionise the construction infrastructure in order to harmonise efficiency and sustainability. Our practice-orientated training and close networking with industry will prepare you optimally for a successful career.

Why you should study Geotechnical Engineering at HSN:

  • Practical trainingNumerous projects and collaborations with industry will give you practical insights and allow you to apply what you have learnt directly. You will be involved in practical work right from the start, such as geo-field internships and soil mechanics internships.
  • Personalised supportSmall seminar groups and personal support from our professors and lecturers ensure that you feel that you are in good hands and can get help with questions quickly.
  • Modern and flexible study conditionsOur university offers you state-of-the-art equipment with modern laboratories and IT facilities. The flexible study models adapt to your needs and support you in your learning process.
  • Strong networkingOur well-maintained network of regional and national industry contacts, research organisations and public institutions opens up numerous opportunities for internships, networking and later career entry.
  • Advantages over a universityAt our university, you will receive more support in your learning process. We offer learning objective control questions, exercises to deepen your knowledge and encourage interaction in lectures and seminars. Instead of anonymous lectures with hundreds of students, you benefit from a personal learning atmosphere and direct dialogue with the lecturers.
  • Research and practiceNordhausen University of Applied Sciences is one of the few universities in Germany that receives an above-average proportion of research funding from industry-sponsored, practice-relevant research projects. This enables you to gain valuable practical experience and build up a professional network during your final thesis. You will be supervised by lecturers who themselves have many years of experience in industry.
  • Location advantagesNordhausen University of Applied Sciences offers you an ideal learning environment on a green campus with modern facilities. The region around Nordhausen also offers numerous leisure activities and a high quality of life that will enrich your studies.

What is the difference between studying at a University of Applied Sciences (UAS) and at a „Universität“ (university)? At our University of Applied Sciences, you will receive much more support throughout your learning process than at a traditional university. We provide self-assessment questions to help you check your understanding, offer practical exercises to deepen your knowledge, and encourage a high level of interaction in lectures and seminars. This is very different from courses with more than 300 students.
