...geotechnics?
Geotechnics is an engineering science that combines geosciences with technical solutions. It deals with the analysis, characterisation and sustainable use of geosystems. The tasks of geotechnics include the extraction of raw materials and drinking water, the geotechnical design of structures, the utilisation of geothermal resources as well as future topics such as energy-efficient urban redevelopment and the binding of greenhouse gases in geosystems.
With a degree in geotechnical engineering, you can work in many exciting areas, e.g. in engineering offices, the resources industry, construction companies, public institutions, research organisations or environmental associations. Typical positions include geotechnical engineer, civil engineer, environmental engineer or consultant for sustainable resource utilisation.

The geotechnical engineering degree programme at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences combines geosciences with technical challenges that our society has to face every day. Scarce resources, the energy transition and climate change are factors that strongly influence our lives and require sustainable utilisation so that future generations can live in a healthy environment. In geotechnical engineering, you will learn how to master these challenges, use resources wisely and with foresight and revolutionise the construction infrastructure in order to harmonise efficiency and sustainability. Our practice-orientated training and close networking with industry will prepare you optimally for a successful career.
The degree programme comprises a combination of compulsory and elective modules. The first two semesters teach you the basics of engineering science, such as engineering mathematics, physics, chemistry, materials engineering, introduction to geotechnics, basics of programming and engineering mechanics I. In the later semesters, you will specialise in subject-specific areas such as geology, microbiology, environmental analysis, soil mechanics, geothermal resources, environmental information systems and GIS. The degree programme ends with a practical semester and the Bachelor's thesis, which is usually completed in an industrial company.
A degree in geotechnical engineering will open up numerous career opportunities in various industries. Here are some of the exciting career fields you can pursue with a GEO degree:
Thanks to our practical training and close cooperation with industry, you will be ideally prepared for the demands of the labour market. Many of our graduates find attractive positions in industry immediately after completing their studies or decide to continue on to a Master's programme to further improve their career prospects.
When applying for this Bachelor's degree programme, you must upload a simple copy of your higher education entrance qualification (Abitur certificate or other suitable certificates in pdf format) after registering in the applicant portal.

We want to support and encourage particularly talented and motivated students. Under Scholarships you will find information on various scholarship programmes. There are also other funding options, such as the "StudiumThüringenPlus" start-up grant, parental funding, child benefit and the opportunity to earn your own money through a student job.
Students in continuing education programmes can find all information on the Funding opportunities.
What is the difference between studying at a University of Applied Sciences (UAS) and at a „Universität“ (university)? At our University of Applied Sciences, you will receive much more support throughout your learning process than at a traditional university. We provide self-assessment questions to help you check your understanding, offer practical exercises to deepen your knowledge, and encourage a high level of interaction in lectures and seminars. This is very different from courses with more than 300 students.
