What is Special Needs Education / Inclusive Studies?

Special needs education is concerned with the inclusion of people with disabilities, developmental risks or disadvantages as an integral part of society. The aim is to provide help and support in coping with everyday life and improving abilities.

Fields of work

With a degree in Special needs education, you can work in many exciting areas, e.g. in early intervention, educational support, child and adolescent psychiatric centres, schools, residential facilities or workshops for people with disabilities. You also have the opportunity to set up your own Special needs education practice.

General higher education entrance qualification, subject-specific higher education entrance qualification, entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or an equivalent recognised qualification. Successful training in an educational, social or healthcare profession or a pre-study internship of at least twelve weeks in a social, nursing or educational field of work is also required.

Information about the degree programme

The degree programme comprises a combination of compulsory and elective modules. Topics such as inclusive pedagogy, developmental psychology, social pedagogy, law and management of social institutions form the basis of the programme. By combining theory and practice, as well as two practical phases, you will be optimally prepared for your future career.

The degree programme is aimed at anyone who wants to support people with disabilities and disadvantages and work towards an inclusive society. Ideal for committed individuals who are looking for a practical and future-orientated education.

With a degree in Special Needs Education / Inclusive Studies, there are numerous exciting and varied career paths open to you. Here are some of the possible career paths you can take:



  • Early support: In early intervention, you support children with developmental delays or disabilities and help them to develop their abilities and create a good basis for their further development.

  • Educational support: As a remedial teacher in educational support, you will work with children and young people who need special support. You will help them to overcome personal and social challenges and promote their integration into society.

  • Child and adolescent psychiatric centres: In child and adolescent psychiatric units, you will support young people with mental illnesses or behavioural disorders and work closely with other professionals to provide comprehensive help.

  • Schools: You can work as a Special needs education specialist in schools and support pupils with special needs. You will promote their academic and social integration and work together with teachers and parents.

  • Residential facilities and workshops for people with disabilities: In residential facilities and workshops, you will work with adults with disabilities and help them to lead as self-determined a life as possible and develop their vocational skills.

  • Self-employment: After completing your studies, you will also have the opportunity to set up your own Special needs education practice. Here you can offer individual support programmes and therapies and set your own priorities.

  • Management and coordination tasks: Your degree will also qualify you for management positions in social institutions. You can take on management and coordination tasks and ensure the quality of educational work.


The Special needs education / Inclusive Studies degree programme at HSN not only offers you a sound and practical education, but also a wide range of career prospects that will enable you to make a valuable contribution to society and pursue a fulfilling career.

Applicants must upload a simple copy of their university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur certificate) in PDF format after registering in the applicant portal. Proof of successful training or a pre-study internship is also required.

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), state-recognised and accredited. The degree programme entitles students to state recognition in accordance with the Thuringian Social Professions Recognition Act.
