The "CLIMATE Network for More Sustainability in Thuringia" (KLIMA-N) project aims to transform universities in Thuringia into sustainable institutions. In cooperation with four universities, sustainability-oriented projects are being implemented in the areas of education for sustainable development (ESD), energy, mobility and biodiversity. The project creates a network that contributes to the development of solutions for sustainability and promotes the transfer of knowledge and innovation to society.

Summary of the project

Goals:

  • Promoting sustainable development through transdisciplinary approaches in teaching, research and campus management.
  • Development of best-practice examples that have an impact beyond the university network.
  • Involvement of regional stakeholders from administration, business and civil society in university projects.

Realisation:

  • Subproject 1Education for sustainable development (University of Erfurt) - Development and evaluation of transformative teaching-learning arrangements (KLIMA.LLA).
  • Subproject 2Climate-friendly Campus I - Part Energy and Operation (HS Nordhausen) - Transformation of energy and resource flows on campus.
  • Subproject 3: Climate-friendly Campus II - Part Mobility and Biodiversity (FH Erfurt) - Promotion of climate-friendly mobility and biodiversity.
  • Subproject 4Sustainability communication (TU Ilmenau) - Establishment of the sustainability communication centre for networking and communication of the project results.

Sub-project 2: Climate-friendly campus I - Energy and operation section (HS Nordhausen)

The Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences sub-project focusses on transforming the campus into a climate-neutral and resource-efficient location. A comprehensive inventory of energy and resource flows serves as the basis for the development of measures in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energies and climate adaptation. The university will implement projects for the decarbonisation of the heat supply and the sustainable use of resources. These measures will be documented in a "Climate-friendly campus" best practice guide and will serve as a model for other universities.
