Home | „And then what do you do with it?“ - Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences invites parents to an evening for engineering degree programmes
24 February 2026
Nordhausen, 24 February 2026 - Choosing a course of study is no longer a decision that young adults make alone in a quiet room. Parents often sit at the kitchen table when it comes to the question: Which degree programme offers real opportunities for the future? In order to shed some light on this issue, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences (HSN) is breaking away from rigid information events and inviting prospective students and their parents to a new „parents“ evening" format.

On three dates in March and April, the university will provide specific information about three engineering degree programmes. Dr.-Ing. Pascal Leibbrandt will be on hand to answer questions to break down inhibitions and provide real insights into everyday life as a student and future prospects on the labour market.
Shaping the future: The degree programmes in detail
Two of the degree programmes presented here lead to the internationally recognised Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree, one to the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree. The degree programme at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences is consistently application-oriented. Theoretical content is not confined to the lecture theatre, but is supplemented by practical projects, exercises and a direct link to current issues in industry. All of the degree programmes presented here can also be studied on a dual basis.
Study programme: Regenerative Energy Technology (B.Eng.)
What is that?
Regenerative energy technology deals with the sustainable generation and utilisation of energy from renewable sources. The aim is to replace fossil fuels with environmentally friendly alternatives and ensure a sustainable energy supply. Engineers in this field develop, plan and operate systems for the utilisation of solar energy, wind power, bioenergy and other renewable resources.
What are the contents of the degree programme?
Fundamentals of electrical engineering and mechanics, combined with specialised knowledge of solar energy, wind power, biomass and energy storage.
What will I need it for later?
A degree in Renewable Energy Technology opens up a wide range of career opportunities in the promising renewable energy sector. You can work in areas such as the planning and project management of energy generation plants, in the operation and maintenance of such plants or in research and development. In addition, companies in the energy industry, consulting firms and public institutions offer numerous employment opportunities. Your skills are needed to develop and implement innovative solutions for a sustainable energy supply.
Standard period of study: 7 semesters.
Study programme: Industrial Engineering (B.Eng.)
What is that?
Industrial engineering combines the fields of engineering and business administration. You will learn how systems and plants are developed, planned and operated technically and economically. This is highly relevant for technically orientated companies of all sizes.
What are the contents of the degree programme?
In addition to business basics, students choose profiles such as mechanical engineering / management (Industry 4.0, manufacturing) or energy / environment (sustainable use of resources).
What will I need it for later?
With a degree in industrial engineering, you can work in many exciting areas, e.g. in companies in the energy industry, planning and project management offices, public institutions, supervisory authorities, consulting companies, banks and insurance companies. Typical positions include project manager, planning engineer, sales engineer or development engineer.
Standard period of study: 7 semesters.
Teaching degree programme MINT for regular schools (B.Sc.)
What is that?
The degree programme combines scientific and technical knowledge with a passion for teaching. It prepares students specifically for the teaching profession - with a focus on maths, computer science, physics or business & technology.
What are the contents of the degree programme?
The degree programme comprises a Two-subject training with a major and a minor subject.
The main compartment can be Mathematics, Computer Science or Economy & Technology can be selected.
In addition to these three subjects, the following minor subjects are also available Physics for selection.
What will I need it for later?
After your Bachelor's degree, you can continue your teacher training programme with the Master of Education Regelschule at the University of Erfurt. This will allow you to enter the regular teaching profession in Thuringia. As a graduate in a STEM subject, you are urgently needed - so your career prospects are excellent. If you enjoy teaching, you can start a secure and fulfilling career in the teaching profession here.
Standard period of study: 6 semesters.
Ask the expert questions
„What do you actually earn later?“, „How difficult is maths really?“ or „What are the admission requirements (NC, internships)?“ - there are no taboos at the parents' evening. The aim is to provide information about careers in Thuringia and around the world in a relaxed atmosphere.
In Dr Pascal Leibbrandt, parents and young people have an expert at their side who knows Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences from almost every perspective. He himself studied renewable energy technology and systems engineering in Nordhausen and completed his doctorate on the subject of solar thermal glass collectors. Today, he is Dean of Studies for Regenerative Energy Technology and Head of Department for Thermal Energy Systems at the Institute for Regenerative Energy Technology (in.RET). In addition to his research on the energy transition, he is a passionate advocate of practical training and knows exactly what is important during his studies and when starting a career in the region and beyond.
