19 December 2023
Dr Andrea Kenkmann, Deputy Professor of Social Gerontology at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, was honoured with the poster prize at the 8th Prison Medicine Days on 8 December 2023.
Her award-winning poster presents a study on the topic of "ageing in prison", which focuses on the subjective views of older prisoners. The research shows that older prisoners face specific challenges, including health problems, fear of illness, care dependency and death, as well as psychological stress. It also emphasises the need for minimum standards in the care of older prisoners. The study, which was conducted together with Prof. Dr Christian Ghanem from Nuremberg University of Applied Sciences, emphasises the urgency of providing appropriate and age-appropriate care in prisons. Dr Kenkmann's work makes a significant contribution to understanding and improving the living conditions of older people in prison.
