Summary of the project

The results achieved in the first project phase are to be further elaborated and prepared for transfer. Ongoing transformation processes will be scientifically evaluated and the findings shared with the Thuringian Sustainability University Network and other networks and practice partners. The transformation process takes place in three fields of action: Network building and knowledge exchange to intensify the Whole Institution Approach, dissemination of the results achieved via the Thuringian University Network and support for regional sustainable development through collaboration with practice partners. This should lead to the realisation of sustainability goals through joint learning and the use of synergy effects.

Goals:

The transfer and stabilisation phase of the KLIMA-N² project has three main objectives:

  • the development of institutional routines to sustainably reorganise all university activities in accordance with the Whole Institution Approach,
  • Supporting the establishment of a sustainability network for all Thuringian universities and cooperation with other networks, and
  • the establishment of a sustainable culture within the universities and their social environment.

Realisation:

  • Sub-project 1: Education for sustainable development (University of Erfurt:)
  • Sub-project 2: Sustainable Campus I - Energy and Operations (Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences)
  • Sub-project 3: Sustainable Campus II - Biodiversity and Mobility (Erfurt University of Applied Sciences)
  • Sub-project 4: Sustainability Communication (Ilmenau University of Technology)

Sub-project 2: Sustainable Campus I - Energy and Operation (Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences)

The sub-project focusses on improving energy and resource efficiency. Initially, further surveys will be carried out to analyse the current energy and resource consumption at the partner universities and use this as the basis for an effective energy management system (EMS). Efficiency, consistency and sufficiency measures will then be identified and scaled in terms of their transferability to other universities. A guideline will also be developed to promote further development across universities through comparative analyses. This will be published and serve as a practice-orientated tool to support the implementation of sustainable energy management strategies.
