Open Access means unrestricted and free access to scientific information as well as its use and dissemination with proper attribution of authorship. In contrast to publications based on the traditional subscription or licence model, Open Access publications are immediately and freely available online without financial or technical barriers. The usage options are usually defined in free licences.
Open Access publications are primarily journal articles, monographs and edited volumes as well as articles contained therein. Free availability also refers to digital copies, research data and metadata.
The University Library of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences supports you in all matters relating to electronic publishing and Open Access. We offer you advice and support on the topics of Open Access publication channels, publication venues and publication fees.
Further information:
The colours green and gold denote the two most common publishing strategies.
Further information:
If you want to publish your research results in Open Access (OA), publication fees, so-called Article Processing Charges (APC), are usually charged. This applies if you publish in a pure Open Access journal (OA journal).
However, it also applies if you publish in a conventional subscription journal and the publisher gives you the opportunity to publish your article OA in this journal. This is referred to as a hybrid journal.
The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is a comprehensive index of open access journals from around the world, driven by a growing community and committed to making high-quality content freely available online for everyone.
Various funding options are available for the financing of Open Access publications:
Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences supports the financing of publications of Open Access articles through centralised publication funds and publisher-specific agreements. These offers can be used by members of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences if you are a corresponding author. E-books are excluded from this offer.
The Project DEAL under the leadership of the German Rectors' Conference, is pursuing the goal of concluding Germany-wide licence agreements with the major scientific publishers Springer Nature, Wiley and Elsevier, which include open access publication rights in addition to access to the content of scientific journals. In terms of publication fees, a distinction must be made between hybrid journals and Gold Open Access journals.
Further information:

Gold Open Access journals charge additional publication fees (some of which are discounted). The fees for Gold Open Access publications are not financed centrally. However, they can be covered by the university library upon request. In this case, please contact us before submitting your publication.

The University Library provides members of the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences with a platform for accessing their electronic media objects in the Digital Library Thuringia (DBT) free of charge. This offer enables the long-term and visible provision of scientific papers, research reports and other digital publications so that they can be made accessible to a broad specialised public.
Published documents are given a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) - a permanently valid, unique identification number for digital publications. This makes it easier to find, cite and link to the work on the Internet and thus contributes to better visibility and scientific recognition of the publications.
Are you planning an Open Access publication or do you have questions about DEAL membership or literature management?
