Nordhausen. On 23 April 2026, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences once again opened its doors for the nationwide Girls' Day - Girls' Future Day. 18 schoolgirls took the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of science and technology for a day and try out what STEM degree programmes can mean in a very practical way.
Under the motto „MINT meets Me-Time“, this year's programme combined scientific experiments with everyday topics that directly appeal to the participants: How are cosmetic products actually made? And how can technology be used to improve one's own sport? At the university's August Kramer Institute (AKI), the girls worked from 9 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. in several workshops with the team from the Nordhausen Student Research Centre, where they produced their own cosmetic products and programmed a smart sports assistant, among other things.
The day began with a welcome from Dr Leibbrandt, who welcomed the students to seminar room 32 (Building 35) and introduced the day with a small surprise and a chance to get to know each other. Female researchers and scientists who have changed our world were introduced. Over lunch together in the university campus canteen, the participants had the opportunity to socialise and experience the campus.
„Girls“ Day is more than just a single day of events for us. We want to show that STEM and personality are not mutually exclusive - on the contrary. If young women realise that they can be just as self-effective in a laboratory as in other areas of their lives, then this day has achieved its goal," says Friederike Michelbach, who organises Girls'Day at the university.
Sustainability certificate confirms social commitment
Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences received the official sustainability certificate from the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth for its commitment to Girls'Day 2026. The certificate confirms that the university's programme actively contributes to more equal opportunities in education and careers, stereotype-free career guidance and a discrimination-sensitive society. Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences thus supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences would like to thank all lecturers and the students themselves for an eventful Girls' Day.
