Home | Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences is delighted with the reopening of its refurbished sports hall
2 June 2023
Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences celebrated the reopening of its newly renovated sports hall on 1 June. After extensive renovation work, which has been taking place since January 2022, the hall is now once again available to students and staff.
Small tournaments of the university sports courses, such as football and spikeball, took place at the opening. In addition, the event provided a platform for the exchange of ideas about prospective collaborations and projects in the field of university sports.
The opening event was opened with a welcome address by Jan Funke, Chancellor of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences. Funke emphasised the importance of sport as a unifying element and stressed that the reopening of the gym not only strengthens the university's health management, but also makes a valuable contribution to mutual understanding on the diverse campus. André Rummel, the University Sports Coordinator, gave an outlook on the future prospects of university sports and emphasised the many opportunities opened up by the renovated sports hall.
Due to its temporary use as a storage facility for the furniture from Building 19 during the renovation, the gym has no longer been available for university sports since 2018.
With its construction in 1970-1972 as a GDR type hall KT 60 L /72′ and its filigree barrel-shaped bar structure of the hall roof, the hall has always been a special building. The original overall dimensions were 30 metres long and 27.66 metres wide. Today, the sports area has a surface area of around 493 square metres, while the total usable area, including all ancillary rooms such as changing rooms, is around 770 square metres.
Although the gymnasium is not an individual monument, it is part of the Weinberghof property's ensemble protection. The barrel roof and the tiled cladding of the walls are particularly noteworthy, which is why a baffle wall was installed in front of the tiled cladding to protect it.
The extensive renovation work took place between 2022 and 2023. Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences is delighted to be able to use the sports hall to its full extent again. The refurbished hall offers students and staff optimal conditions for sporting activities and helps to further improve the university's sports programme.
