The repair workshop at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences is now taking place on a regular basis: every second Wednesday of the month, anyone interested can bring along broken small electrical appliances and work with experienced repair volunteers to diagnose the fault. The service is aimed at anyone who wants to use things for longer, conserve resources and avoid electronic waste.

Whether it’s a coffee machine, a vacuum cleaner, a laptop or a smartphone — faults are often caused by minor issues: a broken cable, a worn-out battery or outdated software. Sometimes an older computer that has become sluggish can be made to run smoothly again with an alternative open-source operating system. At the last repair workshop, almost all the devices brought in were successfully repaired. Only one badly worn-out computer mouse had to be sent for recycling.

The Repair Club sees itself as a self-help initiative: the focus is not on finding a quick solution from outside, but on working things out together — with the support of experienced helpers. The issue of repairability also plays a role in university studies: budding engineers are already considering, right from the construction and design stage, how devices can be repaired as easily as possible later on.

Another factor is a new EU regulation: with Directive (EU) 2024/1799, the European Union has established binding principles to further promote the repair of goods — for the benefit of consumers, the environment and the single market.

The next repair workshop will take place on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, from 2 pm to 5 pm instead.

Note: As a one-off, this event will take place without any bicycle specialists. It will be held at the August Kramer Institute, Building 28, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, with access via Hallesche Straße. Registration is not required — however, anyone wishing to bring a faulty item is welcome to contact us in advance by email or ask any questions:
