In May, a well-attended information and discussion event on the topic of "Studying with depression" took place at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences. Many interested people followed the hybrid event in lecture theatre 2 or online - a clear signal of how important this topic is for many students.

The event is part of the university's internal series "Studying with Disabilities" and was initiated by Prof. Dr Andreas Seidel, Prof. Dr Sabrina Schramme and the university social work team (HSA). Prof Dr Schramme opened the evening with insightful words about the importance of mental health in the university context.

The focus was on the lecture by Prof. Dr Stefan Kunde-Siegel, who first explained the theoretical basics of depression and then gave practical insights into support services at the university - from compensation for disadvantages and individual arrangements to cooperation with the examination board.

The university social work team then introduced themselves and provided information about contact points and support services both on campus and in the Nordhausen region. The concluding discussion round was particularly valuable, in which students, lecturers and staff openly exchanged views on challenges, experiences and needs.

A space for openness and understanding

The event impressively demonstrated how important it is to remove the taboos surrounding mental illnesses such as depression and to make concrete help visible. The positive response - both on site and online - showed that there is a great need for dialogue and education.

Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences will continue to actively support the topic and is already planning to continue the series in the coming semester.
