Research team from Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences receives Thuringian Research Award 2025

Prof. Dr Uta Breuer and Prof. Dr Elmar Hinz are the first researchers from Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences to be awarded the Thuringian Research Prize 2025 in the Applied Research category. The award recognises the „CarboMass“ project, which they implemented in the region from 2021 to 2024 with funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The project investigated whether municipal sewage sludge can be used to cover potash dumps after a pyrolysis process and mixing with biomass.

Think, participate, help shape: HIKEathon X Citizens is looking for creative minds

University President Prof. Dr Jörg Wagner, District Administrator Matthias Jendricke, entrepreneur Axel Heck and Thomas Herwig (Lab Operations Manager of the hike) met at the press event on 7 November 2025 in the hike Lab at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences to present this year's HIKEathon format „HIKEathon X Citizens“. What is special about this year is that the university, city and district are joining forces for the first time to develop ideas for the future of northern Thuringia together with citizens.

Two Nordhausen start-ups take off with TRIP - „anfang.“ and „EStyle“ represent the university incubator hike in the Thuringian Accelerator Programme

The seventh round of the Thuringian Regional Innovation Programme (TRIP) kicked off at the traditional Bandhaus Erfurt - and two start-ups from the university incubator hike at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences are taking part. A total of eleven innovative teams from all over Thuringia were accepted into the renowned accelerator programme at the „Start Your TRIP“ kick-off event. The Nordhausen start-up teams anfang. and EStyle were able to successfully assert themselves from over 40 applications - a strong signal for the innovative strength of Nordhausen as a university location.

Guest of honour on Schnitzel Day - Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences congratulates Professor Poerschke on his 80th birthday

On Wednesday 29 October, University President Prof. Dr Jörg Wagner welcomed a special guest to Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences: Professor Jürgen Poerschke, who celebrated his 80th birthday a few days ago. The President took the opportunity to congratulate his longstanding colleague in person, to catch up with him and to reminisce together. An invitation was extended to the traditional Schnitzel Day in the canteen - probably the most popular day of the week among students and staff.

Studienkolleg students experiment in the laboratory for applied microbiology at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences

At the Staatliches Studienkolleg at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, foreign applicants prepare specifically for studying at a German university. On 20 and 23 October 2025, students on the so-called M-course, who are aiming to study medicine at a later stage, were given the opportunity to gain practical laboratory experience in the Applied Microbiology Laboratory at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences. They were accompanied by their specialist teacher Thomas Kloß.

2 years after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 - Sharp rise in anti-Semitic incidents in Germany

According to the latest figures from the Research and Information Centre on Anti-Semitism (RIAS), 8,627 anti-Semitic incidents were documented nationwide in 2024. This represents an increase of almost 77 per cent compared to 2023 (4,886 incidents). In mathematical terms, this means that an average of 24 antisemitic incidents occurred per day in 2024 - compared to 13 in the previous year.

Hydrogen in the heating transition: Focus on opportunities and limits

What role can hydrogen play in municipal heating planning? What opportunities does it offer and where are the technological and economic limits? These questions were the focus of a public panel discussion hosted by Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, the industry association SolarInput e. V. and SOKRATHERM GmbH in the university's Audimax on 25 September.

The Thuringian Minister President, Mario Voigt, visited Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences on 30 September to gain an impression of the university's current developments, prospects and innovative strength. Together with University President, Prof. Dr Jörg Wagner, State Secretary, Prof. Dr Steffen Teichert, Chancellor, Jan Funke, Vice President for Studies and Teaching, Prof. Dr Cordula Borbe, and Prof. Dr Thomas Hühn, the focus was on topics such as student numbers, new study formats, research priorities and the university's future role in the field of artificial intelligence.

For two days, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences was a meeting place for experts from science, business, politics and society. Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences bids farewell to the 6th cohort of the "Network Technology and Network Operation District Heating" certificate programme

Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences has successfully graduated the sixth cohort of the part-time certificate programme "Network Technology and Network Operation District Heating". The practical training programme, which was developed in close cooperation with AGFW and the TEAG Academy, is aimed at specialists and managers from the energy and water industry who want to expand their expertise in the field of district heating.

Specialists for the energy transition: The majority of international students stay in Germany after graduation

As part of a survey, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences has investigated the career paths taken by graduates of the English-language Master's degree programme Renewable Energy Systems (M.Eng.) after graduation. The results show that the majority of international students remain in Germany after their studies and are therefore available to the labour market as highly qualified specialists.

City of Nordhausen and Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences renew cooperation agreement

The connection between society and science in Nordhausen is being further strengthened: the cooperation agreement between Nordhausen City Council and Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, which has been in place since 2018, was renewed and signed by Lord Mayor Kai Buchmann and University President Prof. Dr Jörg Wagner on 15 September. The aim is to secure long-term cooperation in education and training and to provide new impetus for the region.

On 25 and 26 September 2025, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, the State Development Corporation of Thuringia (LEG Thüringen) and Clausthal University of Technology are hosting the Nordhausen 2025 Resource Forum. Under the guiding theme of "Recycling, waste treatment and sustainable resource management in the context of digitalisation and the challenges of the circular economy", experts from science, business, industry and local authorities will discuss current developments, innovations and future strategies.

As part of the HSN-Impulse lecture series, Prof. Dr Bernd Schwien spoke for the last time as a university lecturer at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences on 8 July 2025. Under the title "More people, less system - How the BTHG is changing the social economy", he addressed the far-reaching consequences of the Federal Participation Act (BTHG) for organisations in the social economy.

ELSA-VG symposium at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences: Focus on partner violence as a risk factor for unwanted pregnancies

How great is the influence of partner violence on unwanted pregnancies? What are the needs for counselling and care for affected women? These were the central questions addressed at the ELSA-VG symposium at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences on 18 June 2025. As part of the ELSA joint research study ("Experiences and life situations of unintentionally pregnant women - counselling and care services") funded by the Federal Ministry of Health on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag, one sub-project (ELSA-VG) explicitly examined the perspectives of women who were affected by violence in their partnership at the time of the unintended pregnancy.

Mobility aids in the healthcare sector are set to become even safer, more personalised and more fault-tolerant in the future: Jiayi Wang, Professor of Electrical Engineering/Power Electronics at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, is launching the KIMobil research project as part of the Carl Zeiss Foundation's CZS Research Start funding programme. The aim is to use artificial intelligence (AI) to control so-called BLDC motors (brushless DC motors), such as those used in electric pushing aids, more intelligently.

"Elisabeth Selbert was certainly not the kind of grandmother that a child might imagine a grandmother to be, or perhaps wish she was. She didn't teach me how to crochet or knit, I never learnt from her how to bake an apple pie and she certainly didn't tell me Grimm's fairy tales in the evenings," says Susanne Selbert with a wink about her famous grandmother. Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences is strengthening its team of professors in the field of sustainable energy supply: Prof Dr Sebastian Voswinckel has been appointed Professor of "Power-to-X Technologies and Sector Coupling". Focus on the future of gypsum supply - the "Domestic Gypsum Raw Materials Innovation Day" at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences provides impetus

On 27 March 2025, the "Domestic Gypsum Raw Materials Innovation Day" was held at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences to discuss the future of gypsum supply. Over 130 participants - on site and online - discussed innovative approaches and strategies for securing the supply of gypsum against the backdrop of the planned coal phase-out by 2038 at the latest, which will result in the end of FGD gypsum. The expert meeting was initiated by the Bundesverband der Gipsindustrie e.V. in cooperation with the Verein für Regionalentwicklung e.V. and Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, which has relevant expertise in the field of raw materials research and is endeavouring to actively help shape this change.

On 4 March 2025, the 5th cross-university conference "Universities in Transition - Shaping Health and Sustainability Together" took place in Gera. A breath of fresh air for Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences: Wind turbine dismantled for maintenance and repair

Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences is actively committed to sustainability and the use of renewable energies. A visible sign of this has been the wind turbine on campus for around 20 years, which generates renewable electricity and feeds it into the campus network. Due to a technical defect, the cause of which could not be determined during an initial investigation, the turbine has now been dismantled in order to undergo thorough maintenance and repairs.

RET.Con 2025: Dialogue and innovation for renewable energies in Nordhausen

The Regenerative Energy Technology Conference RET.Con brought together companies, professional associations and research institutions to present current developments and research results in the field of renewable energies and discuss them in a scientific context. Lego Serious Play Workshop: Mechanical engineering meets business studies

An innovative workshop took place at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences on 10 January, which confronted mechanical engineering students in their first semester with business management issues. Under the direction of Julian Apel, Marlon Klusmeier and Moritz Münch, accompanied by the supervising lecturer Dr Christoph Brodhun, the participants came together to work on complex topics in a playful way using the creative Lego Serious Play method.

Can a historic steam locomotive run without coal? Study shows the challenge of CO2-neutral operation

Like many other operators, the Mecklenburgische Bäderbahn (MBB), known for its historic steam locomotives, is facing the challenge of making its operations more environmentally friendly. A current study by Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences is investigating whether and how MBB can switch its steam locomotives, which currently run on hard coal, to alternative, climate-friendly fuels. The aim is to significantly reduce CO2 emissions while preserving the historic character of the locomotives.

On 12 December 2024, the interdisciplinary symposium on the critical examination of toxic masculinity took place at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences. Under the direction of Prof. Dr Petra J. Brzank, Prof. Dr Sabrina Schramme and Prof. Dr Stefan Kunde-Siegel, experts from various disciplines came together to shed light on and critically discuss the facets of hegemonic and toxic masculinity in ten exciting presentations.
