A workshop entitled "International skilled workers: your needs, our talents!" was held at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences on 13 December. Together, they discussed needs and solutions to better prepare international students for the requirements of the regional labour market.

The University Incubator at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, or hike for short, has set itself the goal of supporting students and staff at the university in realising their innovative ideas. Under the motto "Get Inspired. Learn. Create.", hike not only offers support in developing ideas, but also a wide range of formats such as workshops, lectures and events on forward-looking topics such as digitalisation, sustainability, new work and design thinking. One highlight of the hike event programme was the two-day AI Bootcamp, which took place in the hike Lab on 5 and 6 December 2024.

With the official launch of the RCPoroGips-WandPutz research project, the WIR! alliance "Gypsum recycling as an opportunity for the southern Harz region" is continuing its work. In August, a research project was launched by Thuringian partners in the field of battery recycling. The ZirKat project aims to recover raw materials from lithium-ion batteries of the type LFP (lithium iron phosphate) and thus reuse them for the production of new batteries. This type of battery is becoming increasingly important for the energy and mobility transition and is used, for example, in stationary batteries for the intermediate storage of green electricity or in electric vehicles.

The first advisory board meeting of hike (University Incubator for Entrepreneurship) took place at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences on 20 August 2024. The project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, has established a StartupLab at the university since mid-2020 and has demonstrably strengthened the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship at the university. Specifically, over 1,000 people have taken part in the hike events, more than 25 start-up projects have been supported and 5 start-ups have emerged from the activities. The vision of the hike is to initiate a small economic miracle in the north of Thuringia in the 2030s.

Dr Marie-Luis Zahradnik is leading a project in Bleicherode that aims to redesign the former synagogue site and revive the memory of its Jewish history. This project, supported by local partners and Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, combines modern commemorative culture with citizen science in order to keep the memory of the destroyed synagogue alive.

Over the past three and a half years, a multidisciplinary research network with over 30 scientists from six colleges and universities has analysed the life situations and needs of unintended pregnant women, their support and care requirements and the care structures in Germany. The project "Experiences and life situations of unintentionally pregnant women - counselling and care services (ELSA)" was funded by the Federal Ministry of Health on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag. To date, there is no comparably comprehensive and well-founded study for Germany. The overall report, including recommendations for action, should be available in autumn. Due to its high relevance, the project is already making selected results available.
