Who will help when there is no one left? University social work at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences and its uncertain future

Nordhausen, 4 September 2026 – Sometimes a single event is enough to throw a degree programme into disarray: a serious illness in the family, money that suddenly runs out, or a bout of depression from which it is impossible to recover on one’s own. Since 2021, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences has had a support service for such moments. The University Social Services (HSA) supports students through difficult periods in their lives – confidentially, without red tape and independently of the student administration. At the end of the year, ministerial funding for this service will come to an end. This puts at risk a support system that has proven its worth over the years – and for which demand has recently risen more sharply than ever before.

Nordhausen, 28 August 2026. Thuringia’s Minister for Social Affairs, Katharina Schenk, visited Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences (HSN) yesterday to gain a first-hand impression of the work carried out by the university’s social services team. The focus of the visit was the Nordhausen pilot project, which is dedicated to students’ mental health.

The mechanical engineer combines traditional design with sustainable product development and brings with him development experience from industry. A representative from Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University in Kahramanmaraş, Anatolia, visited Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences on 5 August 2026. During the visit, the parties explored joint educational programmes and opportunities to expand the partnership, which has been in place since July 2025.

Long-service anniversaries honoured at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences

On 5 August, two members of staff at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences received certificates from the Free State of Thuringia to mark their 25th anniversary of service in the public sector. The university’s president, Prof. Dr Jörg Wagner, presented the awards in person and paid tribute to the long-standing commitment and valuable work of the recipients for the university.

Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences and TEAG Thüringer Energie AG sign a cooperation agreement

On 29 July, a cooperation agreement was signed between Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences and TEAG Thüringer Energie AG with a view to working more closely together in the future in the areas of research, teaching and knowledge transfer. The agreement was signed by Prof. Dr Jörg Wagner, President of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, and Tanja Knaut (Recruitment/HR Marketing) and Domenika Heimann (Head of Human Resources) of TEAG Thüringer Energie AG.

A first for the Thuringian Corporate Run: Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences fosters a sense of community and promotes careers in academia

Erfurt/Nordhausen. With a team of nine, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences took part in the Thuringian Corporate Run in Erfurt for the first time. Students, research staff, administrative and technical staff, and lecturers set off together on the approximately five-kilometre route through Erfurt’s old town. The event was all about team spirit, networking and raising the university’s profile as an attractive place to work and study.

When innovation fails - even though everything is right: New dissertation explains why business model innovation succeeds or fails

Nordhausen - Why do established companies fail to make radical changes, while others triumph despite having the same resources? Dr Max Schülting (alumnus of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences/University of Jena) has investigated this question in his dissertation. His research dispels the preconception that success is only a question of budget. In his dissertation, the alumnus of the Innovation and Change Management programme investigated the conditions under which companies successfully innovate their business models - and when they fail to do so despite having the resources and skills to do so. The work was supervised by Prof Dr Matthias Menter, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, and Prof Dr Lutz Göcke, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences.

Practice and studies more closely interlinked: new cooperation at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences

Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences is further expanding its cooperation with the regional economy: A cooperation agreement has been signed with AHN Biotechnologie GmbH for the implementation of a practice-oriented degree programme. The cooperation focuses in particular on the Digital Product Management degree programme. The aim is to give students an early insight into real business processes and prepare them specifically for activities at the interface of technology, business and digitalisation.

Scientific foundation for digital innovations: First comprehensive textbook on digital product management published

Nordhausen, 30 March 2026 - While digital products and services dominate the global economy today, the German-speaking world has so far lacked a systematic, scientific treatment of digital product management as an independent discipline. Prof Dr Lutz Göcke from Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences and Michael Schultheiß (reMarkable) have now closed this gap with the textbook „Product Management: Continuous Innovation of Digital Products“. The work, published by Springer Gabler Verlag, brings together empirical research and the requirements of the digital economy in a structured framework for the first time.

How plasterboard can be recycled efficiently was the focus of a new practical format at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences. The „Regypsathon“ workshop took place for the first time in the winter semester 2025/2026 in cooperation with Knauf. The event was organised as part of the „Plant Planning for Recycling Technology“ course for students on the Environmental and Recycling Technology Master's degree programme and was held at the Resource Institute Nordhausen (ResIn).

Nordhausen, 10 March 2026 - On 23 April 2026, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences will once again be taking part in the nationwide Girls' Day. Practical studies: Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences starts cooperation with regional banks - New business administration specialisation in Banking & Finance from winter semester 2026/27

A joint meeting at Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences marked the official start of a new co-operation between the university and leading regional credit institutions. The partners are Kreissparkasse Eichsfeld, Kyffhäusersparkasse, Sparkasse Unstrut-Hainich and VR Bank in Thuringia. Together, the partners are developing a practice-integrated degree programme format in the field of business administration with additional components from banking and finance. The programme is scheduled to start in the 2026/27 winter semester.

Reforms that affect the entire higher education system in Thuringia must be measured in terms of impact, cost and feasibility. With this in mind, the Thuringian universities of applied sciences (HAW) Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences Jena, Erfurt University of Applied Sciences, Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences and Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences welcome the announcement by the Thuringian Ministry of Science to begin talks on the future organisation of the higher education system. At the same time, they urge that decisions of such importance should only be made on the basis of reliable analyses, transparent cost estimates and realistic implementation periods.
